Growing up in the western Virginia mountains was a challenge at the turn of the century when roads were still unpaved and the small towns were scattered about. However, it was particularly difficult for those who had meager means or illness in the home. Lottie Lee Robertson was born into one such home. However, she never thought of herself as underprivileged. After all, she had loving parents and many siblings who adored her. Her home was rich with love and that love would sustain her through the valleys that would lie right down the road or perhaps over the next mountain. This story is a fictional account based upon real stories told to me by my grandmother. The characters in the story, for the most part, are real people, my ancestors. I have attempted to keep the story as close to fact as possible. However, as with any story which is based upon short verbal accounts, the author must take the liberty to “fill in the gaps.”
