NINETEEN SIXTEEN A Play in Two Acts

The drama NINETEEN SIXTEEN is not just another play about Sir Roger Casement, though he is at the centre of it. It is an exposure of the moral squalor of war-debased England in that year; it is also and perhaps chiefly the drama of a young government servant, a Rupert Brooke figure (without the sentimental gush of "Now God be thanked Who has matched us with His hour.") whose essential decency withstands and triumphs over the prevailing corruption. This is a new stage play set in two acts: humorous, hard-hitting and with satirical comparisons and social comment reflecting the government and society of both then and now. Here we have some interesting acting roles using some of the people of the day including Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Shaw, Beatrice Webb, Joseph Conrad and Sir Roger Casement. Deakin’s writing has been praised by the late Robert Bolt and many others.
