The Divine Office has been foundational to the prayer life of Christians across the world for centuries. However, given their rather limited scope, Lutheran hymnals simply do not have room for the full richness of the Divine Office and merely allow a glimpse of it to shine through. Evangelical Lutheran Breviary is an attempt to plunge into the depths of the Office and adapt the treasures therein to the structure and music of the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary.
This book may be used in a number of different ways. Individuals may privately recite the Offices. Pastors may hold Offices daily in their congregations or pull materials from this resource to enrich Sunday Matins or midweek Vespers services. In any case, this resource attempts to present the fullness of the Divine Office in a way that is approachable and familiar to those who use ELH.
The Ordinary has been altered only ever so slightly, with the hope that one could still follow along with the service as it is printed in ELH. (The page numbers in brackets correspond to the pages in ELH.) One will also need a copy of ELH for the hymns and a Bible for the Scripture readings.
