At the height of the Middle Ages, Gunther the Quizzer travelled the ancient trade routes to Byzantium, Venice and Cordoba. He left copious notes and drawings of the strange sights he encountered, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of baffling, incoherent waffle that was only recently discovered, stuffed in the mouth of one of Salzburg Cathedral’s many gargoyles… These surreal medieval woodblock prints have been lovingly collected by Edinburgh artist Calum MacDonald in a humourous new book entitled Obscuropa.
