The diaries are a lovely record and reflection of rural East Northants in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Diz records countryside activities and pursuits just as the old, pre-industrial rhythms, rituals, traditions and values were coming to an end. The mechanisation of agriculture and the motor car were already having an impact, as Diz records, and events over the next 30 years would soon change the countryside almost beyond recognition.
The diaries give an insight into Diz’s deep love for the beauties and wonders of nature in the East Northants countryside and his wide ranging curiosity into, and knowledge of, natural history. They also detail his passion for hunting and fishing, snippets of local history as well as matters of his personal life.
