These photographs were taken in Chiapas during January of 2005. I carried a small circle of polished black obsidian as I traveled, photographing the reflections on its surface. According to some researchers, the Mayans believed that obsidian mirrors such as this were portals of a sort; that the smoky images seen in them were images of the underworld.
