It is late this century. In Western Norway, seven-year-old Freya is abducted by her father Ludvig, who wants her to start having babies as soon as possible. This is because of a fatal disease that often afflicts pregnant women, the danger of which increases sharply with age. Freya’s grieving mother, Laila, cut off from her daughter, is employed by the Gandreid Project, which aims to establish a healthy human colony on a remote planet. After six years, Freya is joyfully reunited with Laila, with the help of an Irish sailor, Kevin Brady, who marries Laila after demonstrating his innocence of murder. Laila’s former lover implements a plan to delude Laila and Freya, who join him on the orbiting spaceship, believing Kevin to be already there. Then the spaceship begins to break up due to premature re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, and the only hope for the occupants is to use the shuttles as lifeboats. But who knows where they will end up? Worse still, Laila and Freya have been separated again.
