Robert Lee was born into slavery. As he grew into a man he watched as his cruel slave master tormented the slaves, simply for the pleasure of having it done. When the news about a woman who was helping slaves escape to freedom, via an underground railroad, spread throughout the plantation, Robert decided that he would climb aboard.
While living as a free Negro, Robert met a woman who taught him how to read and write. After graduating he decided to open a school to teach free slaves. However, after teaching free blacks for awhile his heart went out to the Negroes who were still in bondage; so he decided to do something about the ignorance that plagued the Negroes that remained in captivity.
Robert met and befriended an abolitionist named Marvin Martin. Together this salt and pepper team traveled throughout the South, under the disguise of slave and slave master, secretly teaching slaves how to read and write.
