In this final portion of the "Trial and Destiny" trilogy, Duane Peters becomes involved in the world of high school athletics after having endured nine months of working for a mean boss in 1974. Duane's involvement in sports finds him witnessing his American Fork High Cavemen battling to break two frustrating traditions that have dogged them for years. One tradition is that of them losing in the first round of state football playoffs soon after they have won region. The other tradition is that of their finishing no higher than second place at state basketball tournaments. During his junior and senior years, Duane sees the Cavemen battling hard to break both traditions. In the course of their struggle, Duane becomes faced with a question of whether any kind of desired destiny can be achieved.
