Salinity and Its Management Options

To overcome the above-described problems, new techniques need to be developed and implemented to reduce excessive water uses and to conserve limited water supplies and better ways must be found to implement existing methods more effectively. Efficiency of irrigation must be increased by the adoption of appropriate management strategies, systems and practices and through education and training. Reuse of wastewater, including the use of drainage water and shallow saline groundwater for crop production, must be made an integral component of irrigation water management, water conservation and environmental protection programmes. Effective salinity control measures must be implemented to sustain irrigated agriculture and to prevent pollution of associated water resources.
