Found in the Wild Woods Hedgerows: Hedge Witch Candle Mat Knitting Pattern Adapted by Dianthe Bells from a 1939 anti-macassar set. Appealing rows of hedges seem chained together. Original pattern written for an old-fashioned armchair with two pieces for arm rests. Glossy hair for gentlemen rose to fashion in Victorian days, and to achieve this dandy effect the macassar oil was stroked through the hair, beard and moustache. Alas, the oil stained the backs of lounges so housewives were quick to whip up the anti-macassar cloth to absorb the problem. Ornate knitting and crochet designs flourished up until the 1950s when oiled hair suddenly became farcical.
