Propagation of light is an electromagnetic phenomenon. It consists of varying electric and magnetic fields and can be described by two vectors, E and H, called the amplitude of electric field strength and the amplitude of magnetic field strength, respectively. These vectors oscillate at right angles to each other and to the direction of propagation and cannot be separated. The electromagnetic theory was developed by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1873.
