Pellucidar

A traveler stretching his rug for the night on the warm sands of the Sahara, heard an intermittent ticking sound from the earth beneath his head. Digging, he unearthed a small box from which a small cable ran straight down into the sand. It contained a telegraph instrument. Thus was revealed the story set forth in this book -- the story of the adventures of David Innes in the vast horizonless country of Pellucidar, where the noonday sun shines perpetually and there is no time; and in the Land of Awful Shadows, screened by a pendent world, where the sun has never shone. And the story, too, of the search for Dian the Beautiful, and of the strange empire established by David Innes on the inside of the world we live on.
