You have been told that artificial intelligence runs on mathematics. That is true, and about as useful as saying that music runs on air. This book is about the part that is useful: which mathematics, and why that mathematics and not some other. The answer has three parts. DISCOURSE is how mathematics is communicated — definitions that draw exact boundaries, symbols that compress a paragraph into a line, arguments that settle a question instead of merely winning it. It is a teachable skill, and almost nobody teaches it directly. STRUCTURE is how mathematical objects are organised — sets, functions, vectors, graphs, probability — and each one turns out to be the shape of something real inside a working AI system. When a language model represents the meaning of a word, it uses a vector. When a recommendation system decides what you might like next, it walks a graph. When a medical classifier says "87% likely", it is reporting a probability. These are not analogies. They are the actual objects. FLUENCY is the practice of working with these systems well: what to delegate, how to describe it, how to judge what comes back, and what you remain answerable for.
