Taking compositions found within the landscape as a starting place, Elizabeth Chiles’ photographs build formal and affective relationships among the visible, the barely visible and the invisible. Many of her photographs endow light with temporal and spatial presence—a visible presence that nonetheless gestures toward the ineffable. In other images, the edges of our perception, its limits or margins, become palpable through screens of leaves, branches, fences and the like. Through this engagement with visibility and light, Chiles transforms the everyday into something to be revered.
