Pentatonic and Blues Guitar Soloing: Five Scale Boxes, Bends, Vibrato and Phrasing, with Online Jam Tracks

You know the scale. This is where it turns into a solo. You learned the pentatonic shape months ago. You can run it up and down at a decent speed. But when a backing track starts, you noodle, you run out of ideas by bar four, and it all sounds like the exercise you practiced. The scale was never the problem. Nobody showed you how to say something with it. This book treats a solo as a conversation. In one step the band plays a two-bar phrase and leaves two bars of silence for you: you echo it, then answer it, then reply in your own words. In another you take three notes and build sixteen bars out of them. By the last stage you plan a solo like a story: a quiet beginning, a build, a peak at fret 12 with a bend held under vibrato, and a landing on the root as the band comes home. The technique gets fixed along the way: bends that reach the pitch, even vibrato, the blue note used as attitude instead of a wrong note, and all five pentatonic boxes linked into one chain. The band comes with the book Every one of the 22 songs has its own full-band backing track (drums, bass, guitars, piano and organ, with synths, horns or strings on some songs), original and recorded for this book, with solo sections left open for you. Scan the QR code on the page with your phone, or open the companion website on your computer. It plays in the browser: no app, no download. Three tempos and a drum-stick count-in. You improvise with a band from the first step, not over a metronome. What's inside • Box 1 anywhere: the movable minor pentatonic in every key, with strict alternate picking. • Bends and vibrato that sing: half-step and whole-step bends to pitch, pre-bend and release, vibrato as a small bend repeated in time. • Speak the blues: the blue note, double stops, major and minor pentatonic in one solo, and a Chicago shuffle gig with three solo choruses. • Phrasing: call and response with the band, motifs, and the rhythm of a lick. • The whole neck: slide into Box 2, then join Boxes 3, 4 and 5 into one chain. • Chord changes: natural minor and major scales, economy picking, and landing on the chord tone as the chord arrives. For players who know the open minor pentatonic, barre chords and TAB, teens and adults, self-study or with a teacher. Use an electric, or an acoustic with a cutaway that reaches fret 19: your solos climb the whole neck. Coil-bound edition: it lies flat on your music stand.
