Though years pass and generations of people come and go, along with their means of transportation, of cooking, of lighting and heating their abodes, they leave traces of their coming and going, of their lives, of their existence, on the landscape. Much of what they leave crumbles and fades with time. Yet, there are traces, sometimes faint traces, of their lives and doings which remain, like the merest traces of ink or paint on a palimpsest of the original text and design.
For those who spend years learning history, and learning to recognize the tools and methods, the furniture and building materials, the means by which men and women made their mark on the landscape — and the cultural and literary traces of their lives and works — it is possible to recover more of the past than might at first glance seem possible.
In this book are morsels of history known and unknown by the casual observer, as well as a new article about the scalawag Reverend Ballard S. Dunn, late of Corinne and Brazil.
