The hero of this story is an English boy resident in St. Petersburg. Through two student friends, he becomes innocently involved in various political plots, resulting in his seizure by the Russian police and his exile to Siberia. He ultimately escapes, and, after many exciting adventures, he reaches Norway, and thence home, after a perilous journey that lasts nearly two years.
