On June 7, 1957 George Hunt Williamson made his way on horseback over tortuous Andean trails to San Pedro de Casta and from there on up and up and up to the Markawasi (Marcahuasi) plateau itself. The native people of the village below say it is an ancient place of magicians, wizards, and Giant Gods. Williamson was part of an expedition led by Dr. Daniel Ruzo, who had invited his friend Gene Savoy to view the immense carved monuments on the mysterious plateau. Williamson later wrote Road in the Sky, much to the chagrin of Ruzo, who claimed he plagerized his research. Williamson's book features fine archival photos of the Markawasi Stone Forest.
Daniel Ruzo ultimately published his own work under the title, Marcahuasi: La Historia Fantastica de un Descubrimiento (Markawasi: The Fantastic History of a Discovery. Ruzo's story is featured in the newly released, deluxe, color-photo journal by Kathy Doore, Markawasi: Peru's Inexplicable Stone Forest.
