ABBIE AN' SLATS was the idea of LI'L ABNER creator Al Capp – he recruited Raeburn Van Buren to draw the strip, and for the next 38 years ABBIE AN' SLATS appeared in newspapers across the country. The tales of spinster ABBIE, street-smart cousin SLATS, and an expanding cats of characters over the years, the strip has been a favorite of fans of the genre. Very few collections have arisen, both because of the scarcity of original material and the quality of newspaper reproduction. The collection suffers from some of those same ills, but we're taking an staunch “something is better than nothing stance.” Gwandanaland / Midcentury ComicsTM is bringing a loosely chronological collection of the ABBIE AND SLATS public domain appearances, as complete as possible and updated whenever possible. This volume has a few missing pages, has weathered and discolored pages, and is far from perfect anywhere; it is, however, an economical and faithful reprinting of an American classic.
