When you’re financially literate you start to understand the importance of budgeting and saving, once you grasp that concept you’ll be able to prioritize between wants and needs. Paying yourself is of utmost importance. It saves us from accumulating too much debt. Piling on too much debt at a young age is a handicap a lot of young Americans never fully recover from. Understanding how debt works would stop a lot of young people from having such high credit card balances. It would also help us understand loan terms, because student loans are a huge cause of personal debt. This is more important for us black Americans as we accrue more debt and at a higher rate than white americans. Generational Wealth. I think this is the most important thing in becoming financially literate. But when I say financial, I don’t mean physical assets only, I’m talking about having the mindset and psychology that you’re able to pass down to the next-generation. By teaching the youth the importance of budgeting and how money works, you’ll be placing them on the road to success at an early age. Teaching children financial literacy at a young age helps them become financially independent earlier, it also helps them respect money and the hard work put forth, and generally makes them more responsible.
