The author begins this story in 1950 having completed National Service and joining
old Wigan Borough Police Force. For 12 years he served as a uniformed constable
prior to being selected for the Criminal Investigation Department.
He served in this department for 4 years before joining the Regional Crime Squad in
1966 and continued in this position detecting crime on a higher level for a further
6 years.
Eventually having given of his best and realising that pumping adrenaline through
body often at a regular pace and over long periods was not to be recommended a
change in situation was then called for.
On his own initiative and request he returned to Wigan where he had begun his
service 22 years earlier. His retirement in 1980 finalised his police service after
30 years and 5 days when as a youth he first entered Wigan Borough Police office
and enquired about a job.
