Makers of Madness was first published in 1914, the year the Great War began. It is haunting in its understanding of the madness surrounding the runup to the hostilities. Hagedorn understood, clearly, how great wars are started. The mass mind of the people are manipulated by a few powerful people to achieve ends kept secret from the general populace, and, of course, those ends benefit the few, at the expense of the many. It has been thus throughout history. The First World War, as was the Second World War, and most, if not all, wars of the 20th Century were manipulated wars, just as Hagedorn shows in his remarkable play.
While Makers of Madness might not work too well as a stage play, it would make a very powerful audio play.
For those with no understanding of "directed history", we invite you to see it in action in Hagedorn's remarkable work.
