In The Time Machine, H. G. Wells presents two horrifying visions of the future. In one, the Eloi fear the meat-eating Morlocks, who feed on the gentle Eloi. In the other, humanity has been destroyed. The time traveler returns home, chastened by his experiences.
A brilliant inventor tells his dinner guests that he has built a time machine. He describes the machine in detail and later uses it to travel to the distant future.
He meets the Eloi, a race of gentle people plagued by the Morlocks, a race of "masters" who live underground and feed upon the Eloi. The time traveler must battle the Morlocks to retrieve his time machine.
He then travels to a future where all humanity has been wiped out and replaced with large animals and plants. He returns to the present, realizing that humanity doesn't have control over its environment and can only endeavor to have a positive impact on the future.
