Ivy Ainsworth is a woman with no claim to fame or celebrity. She is an ordinary eighty-six year old Plymothian who has lived through the the war and the austerity that followed. Three things make her a little different, however. The first is the clarity of her memories and the detail with which she can describe the small things and the events of her life. The second is her determination. This book was three years in the making, and a labour of love. The third is that she was taught to touch-type when she was young, so that even now registered blind, she has been able to continue her work.
This is a story of everyday life with its joys and its tragedy. Similar stories are in every family, however few are written down. This record of twentieth century living has value beyond its family audience, as a historical resource. This is Ivy’s life in Ivy’s own words, as Ivy remembers.
