Graveyard Shift (Frightmares, No. 12)

Every Friday, Bea and her three best friends meet in Ashgrove Cemetery to trade the scariest stories they know. They call it the Graveyard Shift, and it's their favorite tradition — even if the place is a little too perfect. The grass is always cut, the paths always raked, though no one has ever once seen the groundskeeper… only the dozens of old stone gnomes ringed around his cottage, chipped and gray and smiling much too wide. Then Dev talks the club into digging for a treasure rumored to be buried under the old oak — and breaks the one rule carved into the stone below: We keep it nice. Please don't dig. Now small things won't stay where they're left, a message Bea never wrote appears in her notebook, and the gnomes don't hold still anymore. With a cold gray curse creeping over the friend who dug, the Graveyard Shift has until the moon sets to solve the caretaker's riddles and put back what they disturbed — before one of them joins the smiling stone figures by the cottage, forever. Some caretakers never clock out.
