The stories in Hillbilly Rich depict modern life in the Appalachian mountains on the Kentucky and Virginia border, a landscape beautiful and ruined simultaneously. A man sees the wildness and freedom he once had in the form of a red wolf. A retired coal miner turns to art to express himself. A coal truck driver is confronted with violence. Teenage boys turn to cruelty to express the desolation and anger inside of them. A country musician returned to his Appalachian home lives as a recluse and addict. A young boy living between the two worlds of Chicago and the mountains is haunted by an ancient spirit.
