The New Assyria was a monthly periodical edited and published by the Rev. Joel E. Warda. It began publishing in 1916. Warda also published the Assyrian American Courier in Assyrian starting in 1915. The New Assyria was published in English and Turkish (in Western Assyrian script). Given the languages used and the fact that Charles Dartley served as its president and manager, we can see this publication as an attempt to reach out to Western (Assyrian Orthodox) as well as Eastern (Church of the East, Protestant, Chaldean) Assyrians. This volume reproduces 20 issues dating from 1916 to 1919. The articles in these issues document the efforts of the Assyrians in the U.S. to respond to the tragic events that were taking place in the homeland and the growth of Assyrian nationalism.
