The story is a comic fantasy, taking the premise that nothing is as it seems. Haghir and his two comrades are dragon slayers seeking a fresh challenge. They set out to rescue King Brodin’s daughter, confronting on their way a wise man who learned everything he knows off postcards, tree-folk who hate the forest, a tree god who would rather be a librarian, a builder who is useless but will promise the earth, a dragon that only wants to be painted for story books, a strange subterranean species that build wonderful cities that promptly collapse and evil black dwarves who were banished over a game of Pooh Sticks but now only want to be friends after a lifetime of butchery plus plenty of other madcap characters. And even the princess is not what she seems.
