In Dear Dad, Corporal John Foster leaves the shelter of small-town Massachusetts for the jungles of Vietnam. His wartime experiences envelope him with feelings of guilt and self-loathing. He is critically injured but when he awakens, he finds himself in a Union Army field hospital in Civil War-era Tennessee. He yearns to return to his own time, but gradually the army of 1862 – not the army of 1969 – becomes his reality. As he participates in this epic struggle, he learns that, as his father had always said about World War II, there can be causes worth living and dying for. In the process, he salvages his soul and reclaims his honor, but the deep scars of war remain as he ultimately returns to his own place and time.
