Fred is your average 12-year-old boy. He's small for his age. Shy around girls. And the biggest kid in class wants to pound his brains out in revenge for a certain incident involving a Tonka truck. But then strange things start to happen. There's the way he caught that fly like time stood still. The way he inexplicably goes from F's on his spelling tests to A+'s. And just what does it mean that he's suddenly singing about Flying Purple People-Eaters? Fred has no idea. But with the help of his best friends, the new girl in school, and a lot of hard work, he just might discover some answers.
