Lawrence considered himself to be an outsider living beyond the pale of society. These essays explore his affinity with other outsider communities such as the Romany Gypsies of England, the Aborigines of Australia and the Native Americans of New Mexico. Lawrence's relationships with these communities are explored through his works: the novellas The Virgin and the Gypsy, and St Mawr; his novel The Boy in the Bush; and his collection of essays Mornings in Mexico.
