Dr John R. Rice (1895-1980) was a prominent American Baptist pastor, evangelist, and writer, known for his strong fundamentalist views and role in founding the Sword of the Lord Foundation and publication.
He was born in Texas and became a pastor after attending Baylor University and graduating in 1920. He later founded the Sword of the Lord, a weekly newspaper, and a publishing house that disseminated his Biblically-sound views.
After graduating from Baylor, Dr Rice was called to the full-time ministry and served as a pastor in several churches
including Temple Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He became known for his strong preaching and emphasis on personal evangelism.
In 1934, Dr Rice founded
the weekly newspaper
The Sword of the Lord,
which became a major
platform for his teaching.
He later established a
publishing house that
produced books, tracts,
and other materials
that promoted his beliefs.
Rice was a vocal
proponent of
fundamentalist
Christianity, emphasizing
the inerrancy of the Bible,
the virgin birth of Christ,
his substitutionary
atonement, his bodily
resurrection, and his
second coming. He also
held strong views on
separation from
theological liberalism and
other departures from
biblical truth.
