O LORD How Excellent is Thy Name

Psalm 8 — “O LORD How Excellent is Thy Name” is a devotional meditation on the majesty of God, the wonder of creation, and the dignity God has placed upon mankind. Beginning and ending with the praise, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth,” this study leads the reader to look upward at the heavens, inward at human frailty, and finally heavenward again in worship. This devotional reminds the reader that man is small beneath the vastness of creation, yet not forgotten by the Creator. David’s question, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” becomes the heart of the study. Humanity is dust, fragile and dependent, yet crowned by God with glory and honour. The psalm reveals both humility and dignity: we are not the center of all things, yet we are deeply known, valued, and appointed by God. Through themes such as strength from weakness, the glory of the heavens, the dignity of man, dominion under God, and worship restored, Psalm 8 points beyond humanity’s brokenness to Jesus Christ, the true Son of Man, who fulfills what mankind was created to be. This devotional calls the believer to lift the eyes, consider God’s greatness, receive God-given worth, and worship the Lord whose name is excellent in all the earth.
