L. S. Thorne: The Man the Machine Erased is the third and final volume of J.S. Thorne’s Gilded Age railroad nonfiction trilogy. The first two volumes followed the machine: Thomas Scott built it, Jay Gould inherited it, and the Texas and Pacific Railway became part of a powerful railroad empire. This final volume follows the man who kept that machine running—and then disappeared from its history. In March 1874, twenty-five-year-old Lansing Stephen Thorne nearly died when a deputy’s shotgun tore through his right arm on a Kansas street. Before the year ended, he was summoned south to help operate a struggling Texas railroad. Over the next thirty-seven years, Thorne helped carry the Southern Pacific east through the desert, guided the Texas and Pacific through receivership and the Great Southwest Strike, and rose to become vice president and general manager. In 1892, Jay Gould placed every department of the railroad under his command. Yet the official record of that life vanished. In January 1886, the Texas and Pacific’s books were removed from Marshall, Texas, during the night despite a court order intended to keep them there. Inside those records were years of Thorne’s work, correspondence, decisions, and operating history. The records never returned. The railroad preserved almost nothing of the man who had kept it moving, and later historians found only fragments where his story should have stood. Drawing on four generations of family letters, photographs, engraved silver, personal objects, contemporary newspapers, public records, and surviving corporate documents, J.S. Thorne reconstructs the life of his great-great-grandfather and restores an overlooked figure to the history he helped make. More than a railroad biography, The Man the Machine Erased is a story of loyalty, labor, memory, corporate power, and the fragile evidence from which history is built.
