Many parents contribute to an unhealthy youth sports environment. There are the obvious crimes, like getting into fights. Then there are the less obvious actions, like when parents: - coach their kids from the stands - scream at game officials for a bad call and antagonize the opposing team’s fans - act passive aggressively towards coaches who aren’t playing their kid the way you think they should - live vicariously through their own kids’ athletic performance - think subconsciously that their social media posts about their kids’ achievements bring significance - have unrealistic views that their kid is on track for scholarships to top colleges and maybe even fame and fortune as a professional - view success strictly through the lens of stats and the scoreboard These actions are costly. Kids are quitting at record numbers. They therefore don’t learn important lifelong skills that can be gleaned through youth sports. Positive messages from school athletic departments and youth sports leagues - like the importance of character development - are often drowned out by the noise of parents. Let’s change this with the CHAMP playbook! When parents apply the content in this book, players experience a more positive environment, setting them up to better improve both in their sport and character. Parents better understand how sports contribute to their child's all-around growth. Coaches benefit from a more supportive parent community, enhancing their ability to focus on player development. The culture of programs is strengthened.
