The entering of Israel into the promised land is one of the most significant allegories in scripture. The book of Joshua presents the establishment of the kingdom in type. God chose a man who was to share his name with his own son: ‘Joshua’ is the Hebrew form of ‘Jesus’, as indicated in Hebrews: “For if Jesus had given them rest, then he would not have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God” (Hebrews 4:8-9).
