The story takes place in a fictional town on the border of Canada and the United States, where otherness falls victim to suburban gossip and conjecture. Odd characters abound, including the alcoholic Jack and his friend Jacques, who hides a secret; Muriel, the ex-prostitute, and Mick, her former pimp. Socioeconomic questions are pondered upon in this tragic-comic romp, where people stuck between suburban and urban existences try to live together in harmony.
