A Family Tree may have many branches. But a childless marriage is a tree with no branches.
In the early summer of 1960 in the south of England, a nine year old child called Leila is on her way to school when she loses her dinner money. As a result of this, she is present at the discovery of a baby's corpse.
To forget the horror of this event, she is sent on holiday to stay with her aunt and uncle, who live in the North of England. Due to its success, this holiday will be repeated every year throughout her teens, giving Leila an insight into a branch of the family so different from her own.
She is soon to learn of a loss much greater than hers...
