Welcome to a fairytale; the year is 1791 and Liebestodian existence is filled with chateaux, masquerade balls and white powdered wigs. And of course slavery, colonialism and the omnipresent threat of revolutions. Rich parisian libertines live out their lives in gold gilded glory and grandeur but as the world suffers and starves our young protagonist - or at least, narrator - 20 year old Elodie La Roche (or whatever she is calling herself in these dark days) faces the choice between dying for her Rococo fantasy of a dream which only ever half existed or attempting to survive in a new existence without it. After all, not all of us can be aristocrats and this world - whatever this world truly is - could never last forever.
And this chess game can only have one winner.
