Math Mammoth Add & Subtract 1

Math Mammoth Add & Subtract 1 deals with two major topics: adding and subtracting within 0-20 and adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. These two major topics are blended together in a somewhat spiral manner. Students learn to add a two-digit number and a single-digit number without regrouping, subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number without regrouping, add and subtract two-digit numbers in columns without regrouping,and specific mental math strategies for adding and subtracting numbers under 20. The goal in these lessons is not yet to memorize the basic addition facts where the sum is between 11 and 18, and the corresponding subtraction facts. That is covered in the sequel Math Mammoth Add & Subtract 2-A. In this book, the idea is to build the student’s number sense: the ability to manipulate numbers by breaking them apart and composing them in different ways. Each lesson contains both the instruction, written directly to the student, as well as the problems and exercises. Thus, the book is self-teaching or nearly so, for students who can read. The introduction contains many games that help reinforce the concepts and skills covered in the book. The book best suits first grade mathematics studies. The answers are appended.
