Ramble On is a warm, funny, near-future road novel about one family, an aging electric utility truck, and the strange community that grows around them.
Papa Hobo, Mother Mountain, and their four children are used to making do. They travel from place to place in the Mule, trading work for food, power, repairs, and whatever comes next. Along the way, they learn to read the old Hobo Code, simple roadside marks left by travelers to warn, guide, and help one another.
What begins as a way to survive slowly becomes something larger. A temporary stop turns into Safe Camp, a place where travelers can rest, charge, share what they have, and move on. As the camp grows, so does Papa Hobo’s reputation. Soon, the man who once depended on strangers is being treated as the face of a movement he never meant to start.
But the story of Safe Camp is not really the story of one man. It belongs to the people who fed them, repaired things, offered medicine, shared information, set boundaries, kept records, and made room when there was almost none left.
Told with dry humor and an intimate, memoir-like voice, Ramble On is a story about family, usefulness, community, and the people who carry us farther than we realize.
