“Draw Your Town” is a carefree sketchbook designed to introduce artists — and would-be artists — to the simple pleasure of drawing what is around them in their own town.
The whimsical cover illustration is by Buffalo, New York artist Mary Kunz Goldman. A longtime reporter for The Buffalo News, Mary loves putting down on paper whatever is right before her eyes. In the introduction, she describes her own sketching adventures and shares a few examples of her work.
The rest of the book is devoted to sketching prompts, with numbered pages and suggestions for things to draw. The paper is light and suitable for pencil, pen, or crayon — if you are so inclined (Mary sometimes is).
The idea is not to take the whole business too seriously. Carry the book around. Sit in a café, a park, a library, or on a street corner. Do quick sketches of whatever catches your attention.
Mary has high hopes for whoever acquires this sketchbook.
“I don’t want anyone just to keep it clean and look at it,” she says. “I want that person to go out and draw.”
