The Long Steward: Continuity Protocols for Managed Landscapes is a field manual for working in damaged environments under incomplete conditions.
It begins from a simple but often overlooked premise: many landscapes now described as “wild” were once maintained through light, repeated acts whose logic has been lost. What remains is not the original instruction set, but the structure of return.
Organized into ten protocols—time, fire, water, trees, understory, animals, edges, teaching, loss, and leaving—the manual offers a disciplined method for restoring legibility without imposing control. It rejects urgency, optimization, and total reconstruction in favor of interval, restraint, and observation.
This is not a guide to restoration in the conventional sense. It does not promise yield, efficiency, or mastery. Instead, it provides a framework for maintaining continuity over long durations—where actions are small, effects are delayed, and success is measured by the system’s ability to function without the operator.
Written in the style of a recovered field document, The Long Steward is intended for readers in ecological design, land management, forestry, restoration practice, and related disciplines, as well as those interested in long-term systems that must persist beyond authorship.
It is not a book about control.
It is a book about continuity.
