LIVE IT UP 5Myou: Don't Touch That Dial Now!
Welcome to 5Myou, a regional Australian radio station where the music is loud, the personalities are louder, and getting fired doesn't necessarily mean you're out of a job.
Reg arrives looking for a place behind the microphone. Instead, he finds Phil, a program director with a talent for turning announcers into builders; Beano, a manager determined to impose order; and a collection of young broadcasters whose enthusiasm regularly outruns their judgment.
Before Reg has settled into his new role, he's helping build a recording studio, navigating commercial carts and record libraries, and discovering that a live microphone can turn the smallest mishap into an unforgettable performance.
Outside the studio, the Murray River offers an entirely different kind of entertainment. There are speedboats, water-skiing adventures, barbecues at Green Acres, and the prestigious Stannard Cup, where Phil's magnificent promotional boat makes a spectacular impression by sinking at the bank without ever starting its engine.
Then comes the concert.
A celebration featuring 'Yesterday's Hero' leaves Reg in no fit state for his Sunday radio shift. His friends improvise a solution involving a bar dolly and a taxi. Reg somehow gets through the regional Top Ten, only to wake on Monday morning to Beano's unforgettable verdict:
"You're fired."
At most stations, that would be the end of the story. At 5Myou, it becomes a recurring feature of the roster.
Inspired by the author's years in Australian commercial broadcasting, 'Live It Up 5M You' is a fictionalized, affectionate, and irreverent comedy about rock radio before playlists lived on computer screens: turntables, tape machines, telephone requests, practical jokes, and the unpredictable people who made it all work.
Beneath the chaos is a story of friendship, creative ambition, and the moments that stay with us long after the final sign-off.
Live it up. Don't touch that dial now!
