“The widespread propagation of misery and destitution is a social scandal that is clearly
unacceptable, especially in societies that are perfectly capable of avoiding it,” notes
Majid Rahnema. “And the visceral revolt it provokes in each of us is entirely
understandable and justified.
But increasing the power of the machine that produces goods and material products will
not put an end to this scandal, because the machine set up for this purpose is the very
one that systematically produces misery. Today, we must seek to understand the
multiple and profound reasons behind this scandal. It is this quest that leads me today
to show how a radical transformation of our lifestyles, particularly a reinvention of
voluntary poverty, has now become the sine qua non of any serious struggle against
new forms of misery production.”
