Out Of Isolation
Combating Institutional Isolation with Ecologies of Care
This ebook may not meet accessibility standards and may not be fully compatible with assistive technologies.
Out of Isolation challenges institutional isolation among foster youth through a new design model that fosters connection, instead of isolation. Informed by Trauma Informed Design and Biophilic Design principles, the Ecologies of Care (EOC) model outlines strategies for
creating environments that support healing, reduce stress, and encourage community connection. The project applies the EOC to a sub-campus for teenage foster youth at Sacramento City College. The design and location integrate youth housing with academic, community, healthcare, and employment resources, while allowing access to green spaces and public transit. The EOC reimagines institutional housing as a catalyst for connections, healing, and growth.
