Welcome to the inaugural Series: “The Perfect Math Tutor for All”. This second math workbook is an exploration into the world of Quadratic Functions, Equations, Inequalities, and their related practical applications. Having spent twenty-three years as a mathematics and calculus teacher, in Canada, I’ve often encountered a recurring question from students: “What is the use of x or y in our daily lives, anyway?” One student poignantly remarked, “x and y will never bring me food to my table!”
Now, almost nine years into retirement, I find joy in dedicating time to crafting digital math work-books. This initial venture focuses on a specific mathematical concept, offering an introduction to its properties and delving into reallife applications. I aim to underline the significance of mathematics by embedding scenarios drawn from our everyday experiences, urging students not only to solve equations but to become creators, applying their newfound knowledge.
Solving basic quadratic equations for x and y without real-world context renders the exercise futile. Variables like x, y, or z are not mere symbols but representations of unknowns, discovered through navigating diverse situations and solving practical problems.
In the forthcoming workbooks, students are challenged to take total ownership of their learning process. I won’t task you with solving equations for x and y at the end, that’s not the purpose of these workbooks. While practice is valuable, it is insufficient if we cannot apply our knowledge effectively in our daily lives.
What I ask of you is to follow each step diligently and embrace the applications provided in various fields to fully grasp the utility of the newly learned mathematical concept. Upon completing this second workbook on Quadratic Functions, Equations, and Inequalities, your primary objective is to create a minimum of three situations or scenarios in different fields where you can apply your newfound mathematical knowledge.
It’s disheartening that mathematics is often considered the realm of the intellectual elite, a misconception that perpetuates the notion that one must possess a “high IQ” to unlock its benefits. Math-ematics, unlike other disciplines susceptible to bias and manipulation, stands as the Universe of Truth, offering a path to explore the higher dimensions of our Infinite, Magnificent, and Beautiful Multidimensional Universe. It is a discipline that should be accessible to all, fostering unity and enlightenment.
