Through the story of Dorjee, the background, which led to the bloody GNLF conflicts demanding separate statehood for Darjeeling in the 1980’s, has been depicted. Dorjee the Buddhist monk becomes the euphemism for the struggle for independence of the town (the adolescent) Darjeeling he lives in and later like its citizen’s though unsuccessful and disillusioned in the attempt he still feels wiser because of it.
Koel another protagonist a victim of circumstances who tries to find meaning in life and discovers it in the hills of Darjeeling through the outwardly simple yet deeply meaningful life of Kanchi her domestic help.
