This book carves out some of the relation between consciousness and the material world. It uses several foundational ideas from science and mathematical logic, for instance the idea of a kind of “photograph” of consciousness. It also uses the idea of two languages to look at the same aspect of reality.
Derives framework and principles in this large topic. The model is of the information system basically going on in the brain, from a high level, with “marbles” being a central aspect.
Later, the book moves to general issues. At one point, it tries to prove mathematically that consciousness can contribute nothing to quantum mechanics (QM). However, in doing this, the book discovers something, temporarily called, “a better mathematics,” which would seem to be, possibly, a civilizational change. This “a better mathematics” should eventually be of value to QM also.
The author had a background at UC Berkeley in mathematical logic and at Stanford in artificial intelligence.
